Axe Throw

 Scored event
Contestant throws an axe at the target from 20 feet back.  Only the leading edge of the axe can stick in the target for a score.  Contestant takes 1 practice throw and then 3 throws that count for points.  Bulls-eye scores 5 points, each ring out from center scores one less.

Contestant cuts 4 discs between 4”-  6” from end of small log, makes a V-notch at least 3” wide in the remaining piece, and then cuts the V-notch piece off at a length between 18” – 24”.  A flat ledge is cut on the remaining secured piece and saw shut off.  The 4 discs must be stacked on the ledge and the long piece balanced vertically on top.  Time ends when competitor thinks the pieces are balanced to stand for at least 3 seconds.

Competitor uses a customized chain saw with a modified engine, usually from a personal watercraft or snowmobile. The competitor starts the saw and makes 3 cuts in a 6” section. If the competitor saws outside of this section or fails to saw a complete disc, he will be disqualified.

The competitor makes one cut through white pine using a single man cross-cut saw. The competitor may have a helper wedge the cut to prevent the saw teeth from sticking. Time ends when the block is clearly severed. The single buck is referred to as the “misery whip” due to the physical toll a body endures while using it.

Team must consist of one man and one woman. Contestants must cut one complete disc.  Any slabbing or breaking at the bottom must be less than ½” or team will be disqualified.

Team must consist of two woman. Contestants must cut one complete disc.  Any slabbing or breaking at the bottom must be less than ½” or team will be disqualified.

A discipline based on old-time loggers need to establish a cutting platform above the root bases of old growth trees, competitors uses an axe to chop pockets into a 9’ pole and places springboard platforms into the pockets. Climbing on the springboards, the competitor chops through an 11” diameter white pine log at the top of the pole.

Saws supplied. Contestants start with hands on top of the log, saw idling and chain brake dis-engaged. At “go”, contestant must make a down cut which results in one complete disc.  Time stops when the disc is severed.  The contestant must pass the disc through a 1 ½” gate to determine if their cut is legal. Ladies have saw idling, men have saw shut off.

Contestants must cut log in half from both sides with an axe while standing on the log. Time ends when block is completely severed.  Contestants cutting any part of the foothold will be disqualified.
